Aston Villa are set to agree a move to AS Roma to acquire Robin Olsen on loan for the rest of the season and bolster manager Steven Gerrard’s goalkeeping options.

That’s according to TuttoMercatoWEB, who report that Olsen is set to end his season-long spell at Sheffield United to join Villa. The Swedish shooter joined the Blades in August. But he hasn’t played for the Championship team in any competition since November 6.

Olsen had established himself as number one at Bramall Lane shortly after joining Slavisa Jokanovic. The 32-year-old opened 11 of their 12 second-tier appearances after his arrival. Yet he hasn’t even featured in a matchday squad since losing at Blackburn Rovers.

Wes Foderingham has again overtaken Olsen as Sheffield United’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent weeks. He has also recorded four clean sheets in the last five Blades league games since Olsen played at Ewood Park. The Roma loanee has had just one shutout in 11 outings.

Aston Villa have now decided to capitalize on Olsen’s situation at Sheffield United to agree a loan transfer with Roma. The 53-cap international will remain in England for the rest of the season on the Villans’ books. But the Villa Park natives won’t get a buy clause.

An agreement between the Giallorossi and Gerrard’s side for Olsen’s temporary arrival is imminent. Villa have agreed not to include an option to buy the goalkeeper this summer.

Aston Villa seal smart loan move for Roma goalkeeper Olsen

Aston Villa have turned to agreeing a deal with Roma to take over Sheffield United’s arrangement for Olsen after they failed to seal a loan move for West Ham’s Darren Randolph. In addition, fabrice romano reports that the Villans have already agreed personal terms with the Swede.

Olsen will arrive at Villa Park to provide Gerrard with an upgrade on his current backups in Emiliano Martinez. Despite a disappointing stay at Bramall Lane, the Malmo native may prove to be a smart addition. He notably showed his worth during Euro 2020 last summer.

Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak and Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof have praised Olsen after holding Spain to a draw with an outstanding performance.

Isak called his efforts “absolutely incredible”, via The Guardian, while Lindelof added: “He was fantastic, he saved us. I’m going to give him a big hug and say thank you.
