Information released on Wednesday indicated that Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho was set to join Aston Villa on loan until the end of the 2021-22 season.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has been deemed surplus to Camp Nou’s needs and will be leaving this window to make room for the new signature Ferran Torres.
Reports from all over Europe were confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who stated Villa “are in direct contact with Philippe Coutinho’s agent to negotiate a possible loan transfer”, but the agreement was not yet concluded.
In addition, it is believed that Villa seeks to include a purchase option in the agreement which would initially see the Brazilian join until the summer.
Director Steven Gerrard has would have been involved in recruiting of his former Liverpool team-mate and a reunion seems imminent.
Coutinho scored 41 times in 152 league appearances for Liverpool between 2013 and 2018 before joining Barcelona. In Spain, Coutinho has only appeared 76 times and spent the entire 2019-20 season on loan at Bayern Munich where he scored eight goals.
Coutinho’s high-profile signing is said to be a statement of intent from the Aston Villa camp as Gerrard and senior management seek to strengthen the squad. Villa are also apparently interested in signing a left-back and a defensive midfielder that window.
Some sources believe Coutinho could be featured as an Aston Villa player in the coming days. Stay tuned.
