Chandigarh, November 1

Ahead of the MC poll in the city, the Aam Aadmi (AAP) party today reiterated its pledge to provide 20,000 liters of clean, free water per household per month.

Addressing a press conference here, Chandigarh official Jarnail Singh said, “The city is receiving a supply of 114 MGD of water. According to the BJP, the per capita water consumption is 245 liters, which is high. If we talk about water consumption in India, it is 135 liters per capita. If we assume a consumption of 245 liters per capita, the city still has a surplus of water.

AAP leaders asked the BJP that if the city had more water than needed, why was the government charging three times the cost and where did the city’s excess water go? This is a matter of concern and should be investigated by the department.

Residents were promised a low-cost 24-hour water supply, but the BJP was unable to deliver on its promises, they added. City AAP official Prem Garg said: “We will ensure that all current arrangements are reviewed. Even the loan agreement will be to be seen again. If there is something the audience has to pay for, we will make such an arrangement that the MC will pay for it. This will be made possible by reducing unnecessary expenses associated with the provision and maintenance of the water supply.

Party leaders claimed that Chandigarh, as part of a membership drive under the name of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, added a lakh to the party in just 25 days.

Jarnail Singh said people were fed up with the “false promises and anti-popular policies” of the BJP and Congress.
